Life is filled with its challenges. At any given time we can point to some situation that is less than ideal. There are many things that create pain and pressure. We are called upon to cope with disappointment, disease, and death. Financial struggles, relationship problems, and persecution from enemies are often a part of the human experience. How can we rejoice in a world that is filled with so many challenging experiences?
The Holy Spirit instructs us to “rejoice in the Lord.” Being in the Lord is a reason to rejoice no matter what the external circumstances happen to be. All spiritual blessings are in the Lord. In the Lord we have assurance that all things work together for good. There is no negative experience that God will not turn into a positive one. (Romans 8:28) In the Lord we are promised the strength to do all things we need to do. (Philippians 4:13) In the Lord, all of our weaknesses and imperfections are covered by the blood of Jesus. (Ephesians 1:7) We can have standing with God despite the fact that we are frail and flawed. These blessings and privileges in Christ do not change. We, therefore, always have reason to rejoice. The wonderful paradox of the Christian life is that we can be sorrowful and rejoice at the same time. (2 Corinthians 6:10) We can be poor while making others rich. We can be unknown, yet well known, dying yet living. Earthly conditions and experiences do affect us on one level, but on a deeper level we have joy that is not affected by the changing conditions of life. Rejoice always!
